Seaglass Hunting at Conwy Morfa

Once again I have been over to Conwy Morfa to go sea glass hunting! So far I have not been disappointed with a trip over to my local beach and I always manage to find some really amazing pieces.

I always intend to create something creative with the pieces I find but I still don’t have my drill up here with me so cannot create any new jewellery, but I might look into creating some cute frames.

Last time I went seaglass hunting I found some really nice pieces of both seaglass and pottery. Unfortunately I didn’t find any uranium glass (which I have found here before) but I did find some cute blues!

I like the beach at Conwy Morfa as it is always changing. The tides change the beach each time I visit with there being either more sand and less shingle or vice versa, unfortunantly for me the shingle is the best place to find seaglass and pottery. The reason there is so much of it at Conwy Morfa is due to the old Victorian tip that was located at the site, as the sand dunes move so does the tip and it releases all of the treasures into the sea!

Quite often when I am beach combing I will also pick up trash as well, small bits of plastic and what not but I must admit Conwy Morfa is pretty clean when it comes to modern day trash!

Anyway, I am looking forwards to the next seaglass adventure.

Fossil Hunting at Walton on The Naze

I just can’t seem to stay away from the beach so on a recent trip home we headed over to Walton on the Naze to do a bit of fossil hunting. I had the best time and even my mum, sister and cousin found shark teeth of their own.

I had two favourite parts of the day the first when a random guy asked us if we were expert fossil hunters as he had been on the beach for an hour and a half and not found anything as as we denied any such accusations I picked up a sharks tooth and gifted it to him. It was pure coincidence and I thought it was hilarious. He accepted my gift and I feel like I was rewarded for my kindness as I found a huge tooth afterwards. This is not my first time sharing my teeth but I have started to get a bit of a collection now and feel that if the beach is willing to share with me I should be willing to share with others. He hung around with us for a little while and I gave him some tips and tricks on fossil hunting and he ended up finding another of his own before thanking me again and heading off.

We carried on down the beach as I picked up shells, teeth, vertebrae and pebbles.

I had a great time and then we turned around and looked through the shingle again and this is where I found my massive sharks tooth! I was over the moon with it and made my mum so jealous!!

This is probably the first time I have been to Walton and there has actually been some shingle to look through built we have had quite a few storms lately so I feel like lots of beach treasures were pushed up just for us.

WI ended my day with 9 sharks teeth, 2 vertebrae and a happy family and we headed back up to the café for a cup of tea before heading home!

Overall we had a very successful day!

Newborough Forest

I love taking trips over to Newborough forest so it was no surprise that I would take my sister and my cousin when they came up to visit in November.

We drove over and parked up in the car park near to the beach and we took a slow wander along the beach as I collected some shells, I also filmed a video which is available on my youtube channel! https://youtu.be/Paeb-yKF6eI

I collected shells and seaglass and took some pictures of a raven that flew over head. We walked towards Llandwyn island and we could see the lighthouse. The tide as way out by the time we got there and I stayed by the strand line but my sister and my cousin walked down towards the sea.

I didn’t find much as I was wandering along until we got, almost, to the point we would be cutting up into the forest and we found a good shell collecting patch where there were different shells and seaglass which was fun as I was starting to get a bit disappointed with my small haul.

We then cut up past through the forest and we headed back to the car. I had hoped we would see some more ravens or some red squirrels but there was no luck this time.

I really enjoyed my trip and hope I can get back soon.

Finally Seeing the Dolphins!

Back in October my family came to visit me in North Wales and we finally went over to see the dolphins! I’m not going to say where we saw them as when they are visiting crowds of people turn up in boats and chase the dolphins away or damage them with the propellers.

We parked up and walked the short walk up to the edge, we followed a coastal path for a bit where we saw a seal and a kestrel and the we turned around and carried on in the right direction.

We stopped of at a bench overlooking a bay and I was sitting down starting to fall asleep when my dad yelled “Meg quick! Dolphins!” Now, my dad does this all the time so I thought he was messing around but he was not. He passed me his binoculars and I hot to see my first ever Risso’s dolphin!

We just watched from the cliffs for a couple of hours as the dolphins played and danced in the water. They were probably 200- 300m out at sea but we could see them jumping in and out of the water.

In addition to the Risso’s out at sea there were also some harbour porpoises playing at the base of the cliffs, and there was a youngster with them which was amazing!

Eventually the dolphins moved off and as the sun was starting to set we decided t head off as well. Plus we were all very hungry by that point so we left to go searching for a roast dinner!

Overall we saw 1 kestrel, 1 seal 4 porpoises and 18 Risso dolphins! I hope I get to see some more when they return in April!

Seaglass hunting In North Wales

Since moving to North Wales I have been able to go sea glass hunting regularly as there is a fantastic sea glass beach just a 10 minute drive from my house. I had heard about Conwy Morfa when I studied in Bangor but I had not managed to get over to the beach until I moved back to Wales again and my new house mate reccommended a fish and chip shop in conwy and take them to conwy morfa to eat them. Honestly it was the best idea as the views are absoloutly stunning from the morfa.

The Great Orme, Llandudno, from Conwy Morfa.

I have been seaglass hunting quite a few times now, and I have quite a few seaglass hunting videos up on my youtube channel With new ones gong up all the time! https://youtu.be/YJoaPfpGoJI

I often go exploring by myself as I can meander down the beach at a very slow pace just looking amongst the stones to see what I can find. I actually just visited the beach today for some sea glass hunting, I didn’t find very much as I didn’t realise how high the tide came up when it was in and by the time I got there the tide was almost in. I did manage to find a purple piece though which was pretty cool!

I really like sea glass hunting at Conwy Morfa as they have quite a few different colours, they have the normal greens browns and clears but they also have seafoam, different shades of light green and blue and they are all very pretty and I like to pick them up because they are different. I always seem to have success when I am at the Morfa and I have found lots of normal coloured glass as well as marbles, ceramic arms and chicken heads, reds, pinks, purples and blues but my favourites is the uranium glass which glows under UV light!

I am hoping to get back to the beach for some more sea glass hunting but also because I want to film another video. I might head back over there tomorrow if I get a chance but we will see what the weather is doing. Anyway, check out my sea glass hunting videos on youtube! Thanks for reading,

Fossil Hunting At Walton-On-The-Naze

We finally got a chance to go fossil hunting again and I think we did particularly well with our little haul. We had checked the tide times before setting off, which I always advise doing as I have been caught out a few times myself, and saw that it was a great time to go fossil hunting so we headed off over to the beach.

Its a fair drive from where we live so we put some music on and enjoy suburban become rural and eventually we were driving along the coastal road up to the naze.

Once we had arrive we changed into our boots, put on our warm layers and used the facilities before heading down the cliff and onto the beach. The beach is accessible by a very steep set of steps running down the cliff and I believe there is another set further along, but we never get that far to know.

It was a very busy day, although it was cold it was sunny and clear which made fossil hunting on the beach a very popular activity.

We passed many families looking in the shingle trying to find a tooth for themselves, a few were successful, some gave up and continued their walk along the beach.

Together me and Michael managed to find 21 Sharks teeth one of which he gave to a little girl who was particularly upset that her dad and brother had found a tooth but she hadn’t). I also managed to find 2 intact vertebrae and a piece of a vertebrae, so overall it was an afternoon well spent!

We had only paid for 3 hours in the car park so we took our leave and headed up leaving some time to grab a cup of tea and an ice cream before changing our muddy boots and heading back home.

A lovely day spent in nature, we watched lots of ruddy turnstones, cormorants and geese on the foreshore, its just a shame we didn’t bring our cameras!

Fossil Hunting at Filey

One of the things I wanted to do whilst staying in Yorkshire was go fossil hunting. We managed to go when we went over to Filey but it was on one of the hottest days of the year. We didn’t get to have very long down on the beach because it was just too hot but we did have a nice walk along the beach and I got to do a little bit of fossil hunting.

When we arrived we parked up and followed a trail down to the beach, it was too far but it was down a large hill and that meant we had to climb back up at the end of our fossil hunting session!

I love sharing my hobbies with other people and taking my family along fossil hunting was lovely, my mum found a few pieces of ammonites and I managed to find some ammonites but my favourite was a small stack of crinoid fossils, I had wanted to find some of these and was very happy when I did.

I cannot wait to go fossil hunting again in the future, it is one of my favourite activities as I get to spend time on the beach as well as find cool things!

Watching The Seals At Flamborough Head

The first time we headed over to Flamborough head we wasn’t sure what to expect, we knew it was a walk in the cliffs and a very long walk down to the beach but not much else. From spending the week around Flamborough We had learnt there was a small restaurant and a light house there and we wanted to go and see this.

It took us by surprise when we got down there and we found a colony of seals! it was amazing!

At first we kept asking each other if the black dots we could see floating in the sea were buoys or seals, we had convinced ourselves they were buoys and we kept walking around. We then came to a point in the cliffs which looked over a different pat of the beach and there were seals out of the water! they were just resting on the beach and it was amazing! Unfortunately there were some idiots on the beach and they scared of the seals, ruining the experience for everyone.

We returned again at a different point, walking further than we got before, this time we got to see a kestrel hunting right in front of us as well as seeing the seals again, it was so cool!

We had such a lovely time and I hope to see more seals this year, one place I want to visit in the future is Donna’s Nook, A wildlife trust run reserve which in the winter months is home to a breeding colony of seals and the babies are practically against the fence.

Bempton Cliffs

Bempton cliffs is one of the best birdwatching places I have been too. It is an RSPB reserve and is home to the biggest colony of breeding seabirds, these colonies are all different species from puffins, gannets, razorbills, kittiwakes and amongst the breeding colonies is one lone black browed albatross (not that we got to see it, boo!)

I wasn’t expecting much from the cliffs themselves as whenever I try to see some most wildlife they seem to stay a million miles away from me but the cliffs did not disappoint, there were puffin right in front of me, they were so close that if the fence wasn’t there I could have touch them (Not that I would have, just trying to give retrospect!) There were gannets flying right in front of me and it was amazing to see them flying around, I also got to see part of one pair of gannets courtship dance, it was awesome!

The walk was lovely over all but at the time we visited it was summer and it was very hot, we had a second trip as well which was on the hottest day of the year and it was insanely hot! We did not stay for very long on this day but we did stall managed to have a small walk around to try and see some of the birds.

We were really lucky with the seabirds as we still got to see quite a lot but was told on many occasions that it was going to the end of breeding season and there won’t be very many birds around. If this was only a small amount of birds then I cannot wait to see the height of breeding season!

Exploring Whitby

Whitby was one of the places that was on our list of places to visit. there was a lot we wanted to do here, see the abbey, the beaches and explore the shops. We parked in the car park at Whitby abbey but we didn’t go up to the ruins, we then walked down into the town from there as it was only a short walk.

We explored the shops with the fossil shops being my favourite and we got fish and chips at papas fish and chip shop. It was so yummy and is highly recommended! From there we went back to the shops and we wandered down the the beach section in the harbour. There was lots of seaglass on this beach so we all set about collecting up the best bits, unfortunately it was an extremely wet day and our beachcombing session was cut short. We did pop into the Whitby jet museum though which was really cool to see all the pieces made from the jet found on local beaches throughout the years.

We walked up 199 steps and took a seat in the graveyard there overlooking the beautiful views. From there I set up in the harbour and done a little bit of crabbing, I wasn’t very successful here but I still had a really nice time and it was nice to have some chill out time before we climbed back up to Whitby abbey and to the car.

We then drove over to robin hoods bay and we walked down towards the beach but the tide was in so we couldn’t go fossil hunting. We stayed for a little while before we headed back up the hill to the car, we stopped on the way up for an ice cream and then we travelled back to the cottage.

I loved Whitby and hope we get to go fossil hunting again soon!
